The Pig & the Possum

Fri May 8, 2009, 9:31 AM
Well, after 4 years, our 300 lbs 'daughter', Zoe (the pig [link]), has figured out how to open our pantry door and attack all the food. (Its one of those sliding doors that recess into the wall and she's figured out how to use her snout to push it open.) Now, the average person would install a latching system so the door wouldn't open when she tried to 'nug' it. But that's just not us! So instead we've barricaded it with a chair and a stool (we tried just the chair but that only slowed her down a little bit in her bid to open the door) that we have to constantly push out of our way when we want to get into the pantry. (We actually have a pretty small kitchen -- the floor space is about 4 ft by 6 ft and you enter on one end and the pantry door is on the other.)

The good news is, the barricade is working. The bad news is, now our possum, Lulu ([link]), can use the chair and stool to climb up onto our counter and eat all the fruits and vegetables we keep up there! The morning we discovered this was AWEFULL!! As you may know, possums are nocturnal, so the great tomato massacre happened while we were peacefully sleeping. So, we go into the kitchen the next morning and our counter looked like someone's head had exploded! GROSS!

At this point, even the not-so-average person would have installed a latching system on the damn door -- but once again I point out -- that's just not us! So we still use the chair and stool for the barricade, but now we've moved it so there is space between it and our counter. What is wrong with us??!!!
